MINDWELL PROGRAM

Mindfulness: This includes meditation, yoga instruction, and spiritual healing practices that can train you to build and maintain health awareness and mental resilience against the various forms of stress. The approach is based on a pragmatic, evidence-based model of mindfulness that has shown effective results.

Nutrition: Research increasingly links diet to various mental health and chronic diseases, like Depression. Nutrition based therapy, like elimination and special diets, are a promising area of focus in mental health.

Physical fitness: Metabolic disorders and mental health go hand in hand, as research is showing. There are underlying biochemical and metabolic mechanisms that can be targeted through exercise and physical training, leading to the appreciable and long-term improvement of mood and happiness.

Stress management: Stress sustained over long periods without being addressed positively can not just lead to mental health conditions like depression, but also translate into physical ailments like chronic back pain. Stress management is a preventive measure to decrease the chance of developing such imbalances.

Medication: Where other options fail, medication provides a way to bridge the gap and allow people to gain enough stability to avail other methods of treatment later.

BACKGROUND

The philosophy behind the Mindwell Program is based on the resilience and healing capacities naturally possessed by our minds and bodies.

Contemporary medicine is increasingly fixated on treating surface-level symptoms of diseases and providing quick clinical results. Contrarily, wellness doctors recognize physical symptoms and disease processes as stemming from underlying imbalances set off by chronic unprocessed traumas or overwhelming stressors. Examples of this include stress-induced chronic pain, PTSD, conversion, and panic disorders.

Symptom management provides short-term relief.  However, this results in recurrence and relapse of conditions over the course of years. The Mindwell Program aims to enhance harmonious mental and physical health and take a preventive approach to mental illnesses through a coordinated and comprehensive approach. This approach is based on nutrition, physical fitness, mindfulness, and medication therapy.

PROMOTING POSITIVE OUTCOMES

Scientific research in mental health has linked morbidity and mortality more to the absence of positive emotions rather than the presence of negative emotions. It is imperative to cultivate positive emotions and attitudes.

A divided approach to mental and physical health demonstrated by an excessive focus in psychiatry on treating ‘disorders’ and ‘abnormalities’ has hindered the overall project of enhancing positive attitudes, emotions, behaviors, practices.

Mindwell Program envisages a paradigm shift and aims to allow people to flourish in their positive ambitions and aspirations by offering opportunities for character-building, inward reflection, self-awareness, spiritual healing, frequent exercise, diet consciousness, and meditative habits.

1. Professional Wellness Groups:

For years now, workplaces have been implementing wellness programs to improve employee behaviors and overall health and wellness.

images.png

Wellness groups provide people with the education, skills, tools, and social support needed to manage their stress in a healthy way and improve behaviors. Peer support and a secure environment to air grievances and experiences can be quite therapeutic.

images.png

By promoting healthy behaviors like better dietary habits, regular exercise, healthy stress management, and meditation, wellness programs reduce the overall burden of disease. They help in preventing and identifying chronic conditions.

2. Behavioral and Medical Obesity Management:

images.png

Poor nutrition, socio-economic barriers, sedentary lifestyles, and mental ill-health are all factors that contribute to obesity. Moreover, obesity has strong correlations with mental and cognitive disorders like Depression and Alzheimer's disease.

Counseling regarding behaviors associated with weight loss like eating patterns and physical activity is the cornerstone of obesity management. Therapy for obesity-related stigma is also of immense benefit in setting people on a path to deep-rooted healing. Weight loss medications in selected patients with heightened morbidity (phentermine, orlistat) have gained much attention in recent years.

3. Education and Awareness:

In healthcare, the importance of proper education and awareness cannot be overstressed. Some particular areas of interest in our practice include:

Awareness and education regarding COVID-19's impact on individual and population level mental health.

images.png

The need for integration of mental health policies into mainstream health policies.

The direct effect of good eating and nutritional care on the preservation of mental health.

Health disparities based on socio-economic, gender, racial, and ability differences need to be addressed in order to allow for comprehensive quality care.

The Mindwell Program is a wellness program designed by Dr. Arbach as a way to conceptualize and implement a global approach to wellness in patient care. This approach focuses on:
